Vivid Sydney

Vivid Sydney is a festival of lights at the start of winter in Sydney.

Melbourne Part 2

Melbourne

Last week I was down in Melbourne, here are some photos from this great city.

This set mainly focuses on the skyline and skyscrapers, part 2 is more on the people and historical buildings.

Part 2 is continued  Melbourne Part 2.

Go here to see part 2!

Cabramatta, Sydney’s little Saigon

A suburb out in Western Sydney, which is 31% vietnamese, 28% Australian and 15% Chinese. Great example of Australian multiculturalism.

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, is Sydney’s gay pride march. The event has 10000 participants, 130 floats, and 300000 spectators. Started in 1978 as a political protest. Difficult conditions for photography, had to use ISO 3200 to avoid blur, but it means more grain.

Hot Kandi:

Google even had a float:

The local sex fetish shop:

Furries!

Biggest dildo I’ve ever seen!

‘Talking helps’:

The sex workers, campaigning to keep prostitution legal and improve health and safety:

This was poking fun at Margaret Court, the famous tennis player who recently said that homosexuality is a sin and gay marriage is wrong.

No mardi gras is complete without the gay life savers!

Sydney convicts, the gay rugby team:

The huge crowd of people heading home:

And the resulting mess!

Bondi Beach

This is the famous Bondi Beach, Sydney has 150 beaches spread along the harbour and the coast, but this is the most popular. Sydney has a warm climate, that never sees snow and rarely sees winter days below 10C/50F, summer can peak at 45C/113F. I took these photos on Sunday, it was 29C/84F and a clear summer day.

On the boardwalk:

This muriel is a memorial to the Australians killed by Al Qaeda terrorists in Bali Indonesia, a beach area popular with Australian tourists.

The coast along Sydney is a series of cliffs and beaches, just south of Bondi is Tamarama.

Australia Day!

I took some photos of Australia Day, Australia’s national day.

Unfortunately I showed up too late to catch a good spot to photograph the fireworks, I was at the back wedged against the wall.

Sydney’s Chinatown

Seeing as it’s nearly chinese new year, I thought I would take some photos in Chinatown. Chinese immigrants have long been in Australia, and Chinatown dates back to the 1890s, though has been in it’s current location since the 1920s.

Outpost

These are taken at the street art exhibition in Cockatoo Island.

Sydney, Nightlife and the Cross

I took some photos Saturday night around Sydney between midnight and 2am. I was in the city after seeing a concert and hung around to take photos, nightclubs aren’t really my thing but I find the vibrancy and atmosphere of the city at night fascinating. Being near halloween, a few costumes were out.

George Street in the centre of the city, busy but tame.

The famous 3 wise monkeys pub.

At Town Hall station, oscar the grouch!

The infamous Kings Cross.
Sleazy and sometimes dangerous, sex shops, restaurants, cafes and strip clubs, brothels run down the main street.
The area is heavily patrolled by cops, they’re there to deal with drugs and violence, but prostitution is fully legal in this city.

I was shocked at the amount of people walking by this passed out girl as if nothing had happened, possibly an OD? Fortunately she didn’t take long to wake up.

Nice car.

Aboriginal buskers are not an uncommon sight in Sydney, they amuse tourists.

He did a burnout, the cops weren’t amused and wrote him a ticket

Yeah Compton… this car was pumping out loud rap music.

Actually the food on the cross isn’t bad at all.

World famous? I ain’t ever heard of it, anyway spruikers don’t seem to like cameras.
